STI Slips 0.15% to 5,404.02 as Jardine Matheson Jumps 3.0%, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Falls 3.11%

· Longbridge Singapore

The Straits Times Index fell 7.98 points, or 0.15%, to close at 5,404.02 on Tuesday, after trading between 5,380.12 and 5,423.91 during the session. Decliners outnumbered advancers 20 to 7 across the 30-member basket, with three names unchanged, as broad-based selling in shipping, industrial and REIT names was only partly offset by a 3.0% jump in Jardine Matheson.

The session's losses were concentrated in REITs and shipping and industrial names rather than a single catalyst: all seven REIT counters in the basket closed lower, extending a soft patch that has run through much of October, while Yangzijiang Shipbuilding's 3.11% decline led a broader retreat across Venture, Wilmar and CapitaLand Investment. The three local banks slipped in rare lockstep — DBS, OCBC and UOB each posted modest declines instead of their recent pattern of diverging moves — while the property-linked Jardine complex diverged sharply, with Jardine Matheson surging even as sister company Jardine Cycle & Carriage fell 1.65%.

Session Movers

Jardine Matheson Holdings (J36.SG, +3.0%) rose to $57.41 after directors and associates linked to the Keswick family acquired roughly US$36.59 million in shares through the group's scrip dividend scheme at US$56.9003 apiece, a purchase disclosed October 16 that included 356,180 shares acquired by Butterfield Trust (Bermuda) for trusts tied to Ben and Adam Keswick and 120,309 shares via HSBC International Trustee. The buying followed an October 15 notice confirming 942,801 new shares issued under the same scheme were admitted to trading in London, and came after the group lifted its 2026 underlying earnings guidance to US$5.50-US$5.65 per share on October 13. Shares trade at 0.57 times book, cheaper than roughly a quarter of the past five years, with a consensus Strong Buy rating.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (BS6.SG, -3.11%) fell to $4.99 without fresh company disclosure, giving back part of its October 16 rebound that had been underpinned by an October 5 sector review citing record revenue, a robust orderbook and a 32.2% return on equity across the shipbuilder's peer group. Shares trade at 3.2 times book, above what the valuation measure flags as a reasonable range and pricier than all but a sliver of the past five years, the most expensive multiple among its listed peers.

Singtel (Z74.SG, +1.2%) rose to $4.23 after signing a five-year network agreement with Ericsson to support its 5G infrastructure, announced Tuesday. The deal adds to a run of telecom infrastructure moves this quarter, following Temasek's October sale of a stake in ST Telemedia Global Data Centres to KKR and Singtel for S$6.6 billion. Shares trade at 19.21 times earnings, cheaper than nearly half of the past five years, with a consensus Buy rating and a $5.31 target implying about 26% upside.

Singapore Exchange (S68.SG, +0.24%) edged up to $20.83 even as Industrial Bank Research cut its target price to $20.30 from $22.20 while keeping a Neutral rating, citing September trading activity that was busier year-on-year but slower month-on-month, with the softness expected to extend into the first half of FY2027; the broker said scarcity value and long-term growth drivers still support the bourse operator's premium valuation. The move follows SGX's October 15 launch of five AI-linked Singapore Depositary Receipts covering TSMC and SK Hynix. Consensus rates the stock Hold with a $23.72 target, implying about 14% upside, with shares trading at 31.79 times earnings.

One point worth noting

Decliners outnumbered advancers nearly three to one — 20 to 7, with three names unchanged — yet the index fell just 0.15%. Jardine Matheson's 3.0% gain, the session's largest, did much of the offsetting work against a broad but individually shallow retreat topped by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding's 3.11% decline — a case of breadth running well ahead of the index's actual move that has recurred often across recent sessions.
