STI Gains 0.25% to 5,415.48 as Banks Realign and SGX Leads on New Trading Window

· Longbridge Singapore

The Straits Times Index rose 13.59 points, or 0.25%, to close at 5,415.48 on Monday, extending Friday's stabilization after last week's bank-led volatility. The index ranged between an intraday high of 5,448.99 and a low of 5,391.78. Gains were concentrated in a handful of large-cap names even as more than half the 30 constituents declined, with the advance led by Singapore Exchange and a synchronized rebound across the three local banks.

DBS, UOB and OCBC all closed higher in step on Monday, snapping Friday's divergence, as local banks found some footing after a stretch since Oct. 7 in which elevated valuations, shifting earnings expectations, intensifying deposit competition and rising long-term bond yields had dragged Southeast Asian bank shares broadly lower. Singapore Exchange added to the gain after launching a new liquidity mechanism for Asian bond futures and reporting a 27% year-on-year rise in September securities turnover. Those advances were offset by a broader pullback across maritime, property and plantation names, with Seatrium among the session's weakest performers.

Session Movers

Singapore Exchange (S68.SG, +2.99%) rose to $21.35, the basket's best performer, after launching a new "Liquidity Window" mechanism that concentrates Asian bond futures trading within European business hours, opening at 10 a.m. London time (5 p.m. Singapore time) to let European asset managers trade without overnight Asia desk coverage. The move came alongside data showing September securities market turnover rose 27% year-on-year to S$4.22 billion, though down 2.5% month-on-month as the index consolidated off its August record. SGX trades at 31.72 times earnings, cheaper than 55% of the past year; consensus rates the stock Hold with a $24.23 target implying 13.5% upside.

Seatrium (5E2.SG, -2.5%) fell to $1.95, the weakest among Monday's selected movers, with no fresh negative company disclosure. The only related coverage was a Monday feature on Singapore, South Korea and Japan accelerating deployment of floating offshore data centers, which named Seatrium and Keppel as yard partners on projects targeted for 2028 — a longer-term development rather than a same-day catalyst. Seatrium trades at 0.921 times book, cheaper than 98.46% of the past year; consensus rates the stock Buy with a $2.51 target implying 28.62% upside.

UOB (U11.SG, +1.35%) rose to $40.50 as the three local banks closed higher in unison for the first time since diverging on Friday, following a stretch since Oct. 7 in which elevated valuations, shifting earnings expectations, intensifying deposit competition and rising long-term bond yields had dragged Southeast Asian bank shares broadly lower. UOB trades at 1.33 times book, above its fair-value range; consensus rates the stock Hold with a $43.36 target implying 7.06% upside.

DBS (D05.SG, +0.79%) rose to $73.94 as the bank hosted the inaugural DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, drawing about 700 clients to discuss AI's impact on business models and value creation. Chief executive Tan Su Shan said AI deployment would not cut headcount but redeploy staff toward wealth management, corporate banking and risk-control functions, while noting the market is reassessing risks tied to AI infrastructure investment. DBS trades at 18.63 times earnings, above its fair-value range; consensus rates the stock Buy with a $79.33 target implying 7.29% upside.

One point worth noting

Decliners outnumbered advancers 17 to 10 across the 30-name basket, yet the index still added 0.25% — the gap concentrated in SGX's 2.99% advance and a rare day of alignment among the three local banks, which had traded in an increasingly divergent pattern through last week. The pattern is a recurring feature of this index: a narrow band of large-cap movers has repeatedly determined the headline number even when breadth points the other way.
