STI Slips 0.47% to 5,764.79 as Banks and Property Fall Together; Yangzijiang Leads Gainers
The Straits Times Index closed at 5,764.79 on Tuesday, down 27.49 points, or 0.47%, after swinging between an intraday high of 5,779.91 and a low of 5,751.90. Decliners outnumbered advancers by more than three to one, with 22 of the benchmark's 30 constituents falling against six gainers and two unchanged. The three local banks and much of the property and REIT complex moved lower together, while Yangzijiang Shipbuilding stood out as the session's biggest gainer.
The index opened on the back foot, down as much as 30.06 points, or 0.52%, to 5,762.22 in early trade as decliners led advancers 96 to 53 market-wide, before paring some of that loss by the close. The weakness marked a shift from Monday, when the banks fell together even as broader breadth ran positive; Tuesday the banks' decline stretched into a second straight session and was joined by a broad pullback across developers and REITs.
Session Movers
Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (BS6.SG, +4.05%) was the standout gainer with no fresh disclosure Tuesday, extending a rally built on record first-half results — a net profit described as the shipbuilder's historical best at roughly RMB5.4 billion — and repeated broker upgrades. Consensus, refreshed as recently as September 7, rates the stock Strong Buy with a S$5.25 target implying about 2% further upside, with 8 of 12 analysts at the top rating.
UOL Group (U14.SG, -3.83%) was the weakest constituent with no fresh disclosure Tuesday, giving back part of the gains built since its consortium with CapitaLand and Singapore Land won the record S$1.43 billion tender for a New Upper Changi Road residential site on September 4, a deal funded mainly through bank borrowings and shareholder loans. The pullback also weighed on City Developments, Hongkong Land and Jardine Matheson. UOL carries a Buy consensus with an S$11.99 target.
Singapore Airlines (C6L.SG, flat) closed unchanged after same-day statements on its Air India exposure: Singapore's transport minister said SIA's financial position differs from Air India's and that it has no obligation to inject capital, while SIA said any funding request would be assessed under its capital allocation framework and that the Air India investment remains a long-term, internally funded commitment. Consensus rates the stock Hold with a S$7.01 target.
UOB (U11.SG, -0.36%) declined with its banking peers on a day whose only fresh disclosures were administrative: the bank was named an adviser, with RHB, on Thakral Corporation's proposed Mainboard spin-off of its lifestyle business, and separately trimmed its 2026 Thailand CPI forecast to 2%. UOB trades at 1.39 times book, the richest among local peers.

One point worth noting
All seven REIT names in the basket turned lower Tuesday — CICT, MPACT, CapitaLand Ascendas REIT, Mapletree Logistics, Frasers Centrepoint, Mapletree Industrial and Frasers L&C — a full reversal from Monday, when the same seven all advanced. Combined with a 22-to-6 decliner-to-advancer split, Tuesday's session showed rate-sensitive names retreating in unison alongside the broader market, unlike Monday's pattern of positive breadth despite a falling index.
