STI Slips 0.67% to 5,574.69 as SATS Leads Gains and Jardine Matheson Paces Declines
The Straits Times Index closed at 5,574.69 on Wednesday, down 37.56 points, or 0.67%, after trading between 5,568.48 and 5,614.84 during the session. Advancers narrowly outnumbered decliners across the benchmark's 30 constituents, 13 higher against 12 lower and five unchanged, with SATS leading the session's gains and Jardine Matheson leading the losses.
The index opened down about 0.2% at 5,601.09, with gainers still outnumbering decliners 124 to 61 across the broader market in early trade. The decline widened through the session as Singapore's three local banks fell together for the first time in several sessions of split moves: DBS declined 1.28%, UOB 0.44% and OCBC 0.31%. Singtel eased 1.81% and Jardine Matheson dropped 2.37%, and the combined weight of these large, closely tracked counters outpaced gains spread across the rest of the STI basket.
Session Movers
SATS (S58.SG, +2.77%) led Wednesday's gainers after Changi Airport Group and SATS jointly deployed autonomous wheelchairs at Terminals 2 and 3, automating routine passenger transport following a 20% rise in assistance requests between 2023 and 2025 and more than 13,000 passengers served during trials. The rollout adds an operational-efficiency angle to SATS's ground-handling business and comes a day after the stock fell 2.29% on August 4, with the rebound also arriving ahead of a first-quarter business update due August 19 after market close. SATS trades at 2.54 times book, near the middle of its ten-year range, with a consensus Strong Buy rating.
Jardine Matheson (J36.SG, -2.37%) led the session's declines, its worst day among STI constituents. The move follows Tuesday's disclosure that the group is ending its 44-year Oxbridge undergraduate scholarship programme, redirecting the funding toward universities in Asia, and comes despite Jardine Matheson directors having bought about US$995,000 of shares on August 3 — a purchase that did not stem Wednesday's weakness. The stock trades at 0.67 times book, above its own five-year range though still below the industry median of 1.04 times, with a consensus Strong Buy rating and a target price implying about 34% upside.
One point worth noting
Advancers outnumbered decliners 13 to 12 among the STI's 30 constituents on Wednesday, a break from recent sessions when the basket's breadth and the index's direction moved in step; this time the index still fell 0.67%. The gap traced to the banks, Jardine Matheson and Singtel — the same heavyweights behind the session's decline — whose combined weight outpaced gains spread across the remaining 25 constituents, 13 of which rose.
